CommunityBrian C. Layman was elected a fellow by the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. There are fewer than 100 fellows in Ohio. SchoolsAndrew Grant, dean of academic services at Walsh University, was named one of 10 recipients of the 2012 Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition organization. He oversees several student programs, including orientation before the start of the freshman year. He created the yearlong Structured Education Program for students who test poorly in orientation. Stephen Z. D. Cheng, dean of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering at the University of Akron, was selected for induction into the American Chemical Society Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering Fellows. He was one of four fellows named this year. University of Akron President Luis M. Proenza was appointed to the Board on Science, Technology and Economic Policy at the National Academies in Washington, D.C. The board – composed of industrial technologists, research scientists, academicians and others – addresses pressing public policy questions. MilitaryAir Force Airman Zachary Crawford, son of Kimberly Rhoades of Akron, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is a 2008 graduate of GlenOak High School, North Canton. Air Force 1st Lt. Ann Marie Sutter, daughter of Carolyn Sutter of Plain Township, graduated as a commissioned officer from Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery, Ala. She graduated from Central Catholic High School in Perry Township in 2004, and received degrees from the University of Akron in 2008 and 2011. Air Force Reserve Airman Cassandra J. Beck, daughter of Marissa Beck of Stow, graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. She is a 2007 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School.
